Grays & Chadwell v Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Under 13's on Sun 05 Jul 2009 at 0930
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by losing fewer wickets
Match report
Another 'tied' game as far as the runs scored was concerned but this goes down as a victory for us as we lost fewer wickets. I suppose I should be pleased but my overall feeling is af disappointment as the game almost decended into a farce at the end. More on that later, here are the relevant points.
skipper Jack farrington elected to bat first on what would prove to be a very poor wicket. I had already decided to experiment witht he batting line-up as i preceived G&C to be inferior opponents. ex club member Ross Johnson stepped in at the last minute as we were short of players (not helped by one of our boys not showing up). He opened with the reliable Cameron Davies but was soon out for 4. In stepped new boy Daniel Reveley who looked steady but when Cameron was out for 10 going for a quick single I feared it would leave him exposed. Reveley batted on, at times riding his luck, and was joined by asel Perera who unfortunately perished on 0 going for a cover drive. The run rate was sluggish before in stepped Perry Barnes who got our innings going again with an immaculate 27* off 12 balls (6 x 4's). Once he retired it was left to Rhys Willaims and Reveley to try and up the rate. Reveley was out in the last over for a solid 13 and Reece Walby perished on 0 leaving Rhys Williams not out on 5.
84 runs is one of those totals that is defendable if you bowl well. Skipper Jack Farrington opened along with our man of the Match Perry Barnes who bolwed four accurate overs and was extremely unlucky to remain wicketless. G&C made a steady start and were up with the run rate at 26-2 off 5 overs when play was briefly alted play. When we resumed Ross Johnson took a wicket with the first ball thanks to a great catch by Joe Hall. Things then started to turn our way when Rhys Williams bowled their captain and then had another caught in the slips by Jack F in the next over. G&C then consolodated as we struggled to maintain our bowling discipline. it looked as though they would win with ease untila brilliant piece of fielding by Kingsley Smith, running out their batsmen with a direct hit from a fair way out and then repeating the feat a few overs later. We were now running out of bowlers so Jack had to turn to Asel Perera who bowled superbly well considereing that he is very inexpierienced with the ball. Needing 8 to win off the last over with 2 wickets left it was still anyones match. When Jack took his second slip catch of the day G&C required 4 off 3. Then a wide was called which sparked alot of bad feeling both on and off the pitch. 3 of 3. G&C needed 1 of the last ball but could not manage it. However, they thought they had won wrongly thinking that the controversial wide in the last over counted as 2. At this point I would like to thank their ecorer for being honest. Once again I had no support at this game so had to rely on thier scorer whilst I umpired.
There was alot of ill feeling both during and after this game and I was disappointed at the apparent lack of respect shown by the players.
A win is a win but I feel so strongly that I will not be having anything to do with this fixture in future.
