Match report Unusually, it was warm and sunny and Ilford's ground, in Valentines Park, looked a picture.
Michael Gray, the captain, was back but 2 of our bowlers were missing - Brown was working & Lewis had a family emergency. Hassan was back and with Asif, we had a bit of bowling in the side. Which was just as well since Ilford had their strongest side out - according to Ken (Kandola) who was their scorer on the day.
We won the toss & put them in to bat. Bowling was a bit of an uphill struggle but Hassan did well to take 5 wickets, including their best 2 batsmen on the day who scored 68 (Chopra) and 74 (Malik). Stace was a revelation and took 1 for 30 runs, Asif took none - not seen that before, Vipin took 1 for 70 and Michael had an hilarious opening over during which he conceded 16 runs - 3 fours, 3 no balls and a wide. Our fielding wasn't too bad, can't recall any howlers, and we conceded 14 extras - and no byes. Ilford declared after 52 overs on 246 for 7.
In reply we had a bit of an uphill struggle with the bat too. Their overseas, Hewer (a name that amused me somewhat), bowled at around 90mph and several of our boys didn't duck quite fast enough and have the bruises to prove it. Joe top scored with 30, Michael got 21, Danny 19 and Asif was 21 not out when we ran out of time. We ended on 143 for 9 after 46 overs - I'm sure we could have got them if we'd had another 6 overs ;-) Result, another draw.
We bowled 17 overs an hour and Ilford 16 but the umps said nowt and it seems as if it's normal to get only 46 or so overs in reply.
So it was all back to Basildon for the Caribbean beach party - the incriminating evidence of which is at various places on the internet...
