Weather was okay, had been raining so hope they had covers. Cloudy but with sunny intervals.
Same team as last week with Brown continuing as captain. We won the toss & put them in to bat with Brown & Lewis opening the bowling. They didn't start off too badly, Brown with alternate maidens till his 6th followed by 2 wicket maidens; in fact 4 of his 5 wickets were wicket maidens. Lewis started with a maiden, got the first wicket of the game in his 3rd over, till he was replaced after 7 by Asif who also started with a maiden and a wicket in his 3rd. Brown was clearly knackered after 20 overs so was replaced by Vipin who bowled 3 overs before Brown came back on at the other end, after a brief reappearance by Lewis & a couple of overs from Tony, to finish the innings with Asif. The catches went to Danny with 3 and Scott got the other and Chelmsford declared on 201 for 8 after 177 minutes.

After tea we opened with Mike & Joe. Joe was unlucky to be given out, LBW (22 minutes, 19 balls) for 8. Mike did well to get 40 (69m 59b) and ended up with the 2nd highest score of the day. It was difficult to concentrate on the scoring during this period due to the tardiness of the Chelmsford bowlers. I think it was in the region of 14 overs in the first hour until the umpires appeared to have a word with them. In future I'll be bringing a book to read in case this happens again. Anyway... Vipin & Tony replaced the openers and did well, Vipin ending up our top scorer with 63 (110m 88b) and Tony on 24 (56m 62b). Scott & Stace chipped in with 14 and 9 respectively, Danny with 6 (and only 4 byes) and Luke was unlucky to be out for 0 (think he'd dozed off waiting to go in and wasn't quite awake) which left it down to Lewis and Brown to hold out for the draw after the last hour that took us up to 7.18. We ended on 182 for 7 after 183 minutes.
There was a long discussion with umpires and scorers of the over rate, which there was not an agreement by the four, but it was decided by the UMPIRES that no action would be taken by them.
If we can bowl 18 overs an hour in the same conditions, with the same umpires, with their players talking between overs also then they should have been able to also bowl 17/18 overs and hour But where's the incentive??
The opinions expressed in this report are mine, and not necessarily those of anyone else at Basildon & Pitsea CC.
