Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club 1st XI Sat v Horndon on the Hill on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1300
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won By 5 Wickets
Match report
Viv (Scorers Report)
Much better day for cricket than last week when the game was abandoned before a ball had been bowled. And it cleared up a bit later too - I'm sure we could have got a bit of a game in. Still, 6 easy points...
Back to today... The team was bolstered by the return of the captain, Michael, from paternity duties who duly won the toss & elected to field. Brown & Kiani opened the bowling in almost-usual fashion, Brown conceding 3 runs in his first 4 overs and Kiani 8 runs, 2 no-balls, a wide, a bye and a wicket in his first 2.
Fluffer took over from Hassan after 7 overs and Asif from Brown after 11. They both did well (as you'll see from the stats), of particular note was Fluffer's solo wide (tho it went for 2). Asif started well with a maiden, lulled them into a false sense of security with some high-scoring overs (31-0 after 6) before taking out 2 of theirs in his next. Good to see the wickets shared, good for competition for "best bowler". Their no. 4, Max Osborne, took some removing, batting for just under 2 hours and ending on 54 but Brown got him in the end.
In the field, Stace threw himself around a bit, belying his age but getting injured in the process and Danny (Snr) ended with a stumping, 3 catches and 15 byes. The other 2 catches were from Tony & Scott. I know you'll see that in the stats but I don't want them sulking for not getting a mention.
After a delicious Bas & Pits special summer tea we started our reply just gone 4pm with Michael & Joe opening the batting with a partnership of 47. Scott chipped in with 16 and Tony was unlucky to be given out LBW on 11 - the umpire took an age to decide that one. But that freed Tony up to become Stace's runner when he remembered his calf injury. He also forgot not to run, which was amusing and left me wondering whether to award Tony & Stace a run each off the same ball. My fellow-scorer wouldn't go for it however.
Vipin was also unlucky, ending on 3 but we're sure he'll come good soon and we ended the game with Stace on 43 not out & Danny on 8 not out to win by 5 wickets and claim 18 points.
