Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club 1st XI Sat v Fives & Heronians on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1300
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by 16 Runs
Match report
A hard game in prospect today. Fives beat us in May and though I said at the time we'd turn them over when we got them home I was no longer confident. They visited us today second in the League, just 9 points behind. In football parlance this was a 6-pointer. Must be 36/40-pointer in cricket parlance then.
Anyway... there were a few players in the nets when I arrived - always good to see. Later on, a 'proper' warm up - not that I know what a proper warm up is - but good to see some fielding - catching (& dropping
;-)) - practice. Nice to see all the lads turning up on time or early these days too. As 1pm approached the clouds gathered but in the main it was sunny.
We won the toss and decided to bat for a change. Didn't start off too well, the 2 openers departing for just 16 between them. Ross, back in the side for Scott who had a prior engagement, came in next and steadied things, making 24. Tanvir, in next, was our top scorer once again with 43, the 2nd top scorer being our 12th man - Extras.
Some of the decisions didn't help, but in the main we gave away our wickets too cheaply and ended on 168 from 50.4 overs - a disappointing performance from players who are capable of so much more than that.
After tea Brown started our attack in his usual fashion with a maiden, and a wicket in his second. 4 of his first 6 overs were maidens by which time he was 2 for 7.
At the other end Mr Lewis waited until his 2nd over for his first maiden of the game, unfortunately it was also his last. Maiden, that is, not over. He was trying hard but getting nowhere so was replaced by Asif who took his first wicket in his 3rd over.
By 5.45 Brown was plainly knackered so came off for a while, replaced by
Tanvir and then Kiran. At 6pm Fives were 110-5 with a couple of their
batsmen proving difficult to remove and it was anybody's game. At 6.20 Brown, back from his 'rest' but looking no less knackered, and Asif, set about removing them, ending up with 5 wickets each wrapping up the game, and the 20 points, by 6.45.
