Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Lost 44 runs

Match report After mother nature had tried her best to ruin the cricket season for the massed gathering, it was time for the B&P youth to get underway in the Bradford Cup, against Rankins.

Selection problems on both sides conspired to leave us both with 10 players, and within the B&P team there were two U11 players in Charlie Blerkom and Sam Good, both of which had been snapped up at Friday night’s friendly match for the U11’s.

The Rankins captain won the toss and decided to bat; and B&P took to the field with the instructions to enjoy the game and do themselves proud. And they did, with a dogged display of fielding, denying and frustrating the opponents and forcing them to work for their runs. Rankins finished with 114 runs, for 5 wickets; and most pleasing was that B&P only gave away 17 in extras, which was a problem last year in some games. The Rankins skipper top scored for them with 32, with their number 5 also scoring 23 not out to push them along; Harrison Birch, Finlay Munro, skipper Ryan Davies and Sam Good (2) with the wickets.

After a biscuit or two, B&P started the reply, and the Rankins attack was as physical as when they batted, as they peppered pacey balls into the B&P batsmen. As much as the boys tried, they could not stem the flow of wickets, and although we got through to the end of the 20 overs, we could only muster 70 runs, and lost by 44 runs. Skipper Ryan Davies top scored for B&P with 18, with the Rankins bowler Mehta returning 2-2-0-2 as the best bowling figures.

A lot of positives were to be had from the game; and no one disgraced themselves against a better team. We move on to concentrate on the league in a couple of weeks time.
