Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report And so the gallant Basildon & Pitsea boy’s run in the Bradford Cup came to a dignified end on a mild Thursday night in Hutton.

Our hosts won the toss, and elected to field first, and their opening attack was miserly and well organised, leaving B&P only 33 runs after 10 overs, and certain defeat on the cards. However, Skipper Mitchell McLeod started to pick up runs, and by the time he retired on 31no the run rate was more healthy, and with cameo performances by Jack Green, making his debut and Sonny Downes, the score moved up to a healthy 97/3 off our allotted overs.

After tea, B&P took to the field, and the Hutton batsmen took to scoring heavily; quick singles were the order of the day, interspersed with the odd boundary which lead to their opening bat leaving the field matching McLeod’s earlier score of 31no. This changed the game slightly; the run rate dropped, and B&P started to bag wickets. Green took a catch from McLeod’s bowling, followed by McLeod taking a brilliant catch off Harrison Birch’s bowling to leave the hosts rocking a little. When Ryan Davies chipped in with 2 wickets (caught Harry Davie and bowled) in one over, Hutton were more than a little relieved to creep over the finishing line with 3.5 overs to spare.

The B&P boys can be proud of themselves that although they lost to a better team, they gave a good account of themselves and also created a little bit of history in reaching this far. Time to concentrate on the league now, and if performances like this continue (but not results) who knows…….

Special mention to our umpire for the day Frank McLeod; our hosts had the cheek to enquire if our umpire was up to speed with the rules; however when our umpire no-balled them for too many fielders on the leg side behind square, all eyes fell upon their umpire for not spotting the transgression!!
