Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Under 13's v Eastwood on Sun 08 May 2011 at 9.30am
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won By 10 wickets
Match report
The scene was set; a breezy Mopsies Park would be the setting to see if our young charges could reap the benefits of Mr Bonnett's meticulous winter preperations.
However, at 8:30am the scene was not so breezy; a light shower dusting the square, and concerns that the game may not happen. However, a chink of light was seen in the clouds, which soon dispersed, and a cheerful and bright day was born.
Our leader, young Mitchell McLeod won the toss, and elected to take to the field for the first innings. Our warriors took to their task well; however a combination of well placed shots, and some wide deliveries led to our opponents cruising along at over 5 an over. A breakthrough by Connor Barnes; trapping the opener LBW brought Basildon back into the hunt.
Then the wickets tumbled; another by Barnes, an LBW by Ben Thompson, Ryan Davies chipping in, and this coupled with some kamikaze running led to a couple of run outs, leading to a final score of 90 for 6 off of our opponents alloted overs.
Basildon & Pitsea, suitably refreshed by Lorraine Barnes' glorious tea, took to the field for our innings, chasing a total that had caused raised eyebrows and mumurs on the patio. However our very own gladiators in Regan "Titus" Mead and Harrison "Hadrian" Morris wielded their trusty swords of willow, playing sumptious shots to all four corners of the ground, running freely and plundering runs aplenty.
Young Regan deservedly took his ovation from the patio, as he left the field retiring on 35, with Mitchell McLeod taking over where Regan left off. Harrison continued to score at will, and was there until the end to steer Basildon & Pitsea home with four overs spare, and no wickets lost.
So Basildon & Pitsea move into the second round of the cup; and it was proven that a good winter can make for a great summer. Next up for the boys is a league game against Stanford-Le-Hope.
