Rayleigh v Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Under 13's on Sun 28 Aug 2011 at 09:30am
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by 7 runs (D/L method)
Match report
"There never is rain on semi final day........." famous last words when questions were asked what happens in the event of rain. And so, justice was served, albeit from a conservatory somewhere in deepest Essex, as the Basildon & Pitsea steam train rolled through Rayleigh on their way to a final date with Orsett.
At 9am, the pudding of a wicket due to yesterday's brief put powerful showers was passed fit to play (only just) and with skipper Mitchell McLeod winning the toss and electing to field, we were underway 15 minutes later (crucially).....
Brisk and eager fielding was the order of the day again; B&P never letting Rayleigh get into any scoring flow. Testament to this was that Rayleigh's opener was still there at the end of the 20 overs, and had only scores 24 by that time. With low scoring (or lower than they are used to) silly shots come into play, and the B&P field were grateful to see that wayward skybound shots become the norm for the opposition, especially 3 catches from Nathan Hubble, who could have posted the outcome onto Facebook before having to take each catch, such was the height the batsmen got on their shots through to our keeper.
The number 2 bat fell to a Ryan Davies catch from Harrison Birch's bowling; Hubble then took his first catch after a sky rocket off Harry Davie's bowling to dispatch the number 3. Next to go was the number 4, Davies trapping him LBW and then the number 5 went after Hubble caught him from Davies again. In Davies next over he removed the number 6 and 7 from office, bowled and caught Hubble again, with McLeod catching from Birch's bowling to leave the hosts 101 for 7 from 20 overs.
After some biscuits, B&P started the reply; Regan Mead was the first to perish, caught our for 4. However Sonny Downes and Harrison Morris picked up the rate, Downes next to go for 14. McLeod came to the crease, and was bowled for 0, leaving Jack Green to come in and score a sprightly 14 before being run out. Morris had departed for 20 after being caught, and with Anthony Ayres being run out on 1, Hubble and Birch were out there looking to steer us home, needing only 12 runs off 3 overs.
However, mother nature had different ideas; a heavy rain storm lashed across the field, and the pitch became quite water logged. Despite the best efforts of the Rayleigh faithful to dry the pitch (including lashings of woodchip), at the inspection of the wicket it started to rain again.
The Rayleigh management, knowing that at this time they would be behind on every conceivable calculation, offered the only decent thing; a replay of the match. However, B&P management stood firm and asked for a league ruling.
The league rules Duckworth Lewis would be the decider, and so for the first time ever in the history of youth cricket, a game was settled D/L, with B&P quite rightly awarded the game.
Next up is Orsett in the final; who didn't have to worry about the weather, as there game lasted less than an hour this morning....after skittling out Leigh on Sea for 23, they won by 10 wickets......
