Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Under 13's v Wickford on Sun 31 May 2009 at 0930
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by losing fewer wickets

Match report At the time of writing this report I am not sure if this game was 'tied' or we won by losing fewer wickets. In any event this was a genuine nail-biter played under blue skies and a fierce early summer sun.

After being put into bat openers Jack Farrington and Cameron Davies made a slow start against some tight accurate bowling. When skipper farrington was bowled for 2 in the 4th over we had only managed 8 runs. Perry Barnes came to the crease in confident mood afyer last weeks 20. He had to be on his best form keeping out some tight accurate bowling and found it difficult to score freely. After 10 overs we had sluggishly progressed to 20 for 1 and a welcome drinks break enabled coaches Sharpe and Davies to re-assess out tactics for the final 10 overs. Cameron Davies hung around for a defiant 16 before he fell to a catch at mid wicket which meant that Perry was joined in the middle by an out of form Yash Patel in the 12th over. The run rate increased as the boundaries started to flow and at the end of our 20 we had posted a modest but nevertheless 'respectable' total of 76 for 2 with Perry Barnes and Yash Patel unbeaten on 23 and 16 respectively. Surely though not enough to defend against a very well organised Wickford (quite outstanding in the field saving an estimated 20 runs with good field positioning).

Wickford, understandably confident, stared well and were 12 for 0 after 2. Farrington then removed their opener but they were undaunted and progressed easily to 36 without further loss after 6 overs. The hot sun was starting to take its toll when Perry had to leave the field after feeling sick so we were down to 10. Yash came into the attack and picked up a wicket as did Mitchell McLeod and debutant Rubel Francis but at the 10 overs point Wickford were well placed for victory at 51 for 4. Perry came back on to bowl an over but was clearly not that well so Jack had to turn to Robert Morden. Robert then produced an inspired spell (4-2-8-4) and was extremely unlucky not to get a hat-trick when a ball clipped the leg stump without dislodging the bail. He reduced the visitors to 68 for 8 after 18 and now an unlikely victory was on but at the fall of the 9th wicket (a run out) their retired captain was back at the crease and they needed only 8 off the final 2 overs. Some frantic field placings and good backing up restricted Wickford as they struggled to get the ball through our infield and could only manage 4 off the last over which meant that the scores finished level on 76.

I first thought that this meant we had tied but it appears that in the event of a tie the team losing the fewest wickets wins! So well done B&P on a fine performance but a special mention must go to Robert Morden for his match turning bowling spell.
