Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Under 13's v Wickford on Sun 19 Jun 2011 at 10.00am
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Out of the gloom and despair of Saturday's near washout for the adult teams, a bright shining light shone over Mopsies on the Sunday morning, as the Under 13's posted their 5th win of the season over top of the table, and derby day rivals Wickford to delight the dads who had missed out on their breakfast in bed on Father's day.

Skipper Mitchell McLeod won the toss, and in time honoured fashion took to the field for the first innings, and 3 balls into the Wickford innings Ben Thompson sent the opening bat back to the clubhouse, with no score on the board. B&P's tails were up now, and following a tidy over from Jack Green, Thompson struck first ball of the next over, the number 3 for Wickford could only watch as the ball looped into Anthony Ayres grateful hands and the slow walk to the dressing room followed.

Brief respite from wicket taking followed, as the number 2 and 4 bat for Wickford put on a tidy partnership of 44 before Harrison Birch bowled the no 4 out for 17 and more was to follow; Harry Davie took a wicket following a cracking catch by Tom Hardy, Green bagged one as the ball sky rocketed up in the air and straight back down into Nathan Hubble's gloves and Birch bagged another, sending the number 7 back with everyone's favourite bathroom accessory. At the other end, the number 2 bat had amassed 26 runs quite smartly, and after duly retiring sat on the patio padded up waiting to come back in. He didn't have to wait long, as Birch run out the number 8, McLeod skittled the number 9 and Downes took the number 11, all with only 3 runs between them scored.

This allowed the retiree back in, and try as he might to nick the strike at the end of the over, he couldn't, leaving the number 10 exposed. The exposure lasted 1 ball into the 18th over, as Birch bowled him for 1, and our guests were back in the away dressing room 74 all out, and probably wondering what was happening.

After tea, and with strict instructions to bat sensibly, B&P started the comeback. Downes was unlucky to get skittled for 3, but this led Regan Mead and McLeod into the attack, and attack they did; Mead walking off 25 not out (again); and now a very real threat to Jon Bonnett's record of retirements in a season, and McLeod coming off with a huge smile from a huge 6 (scattering the patrons of the patio at the same time) with an unbeaten 27. Green was unlucky to loop one square for 0; however Ayres and Hubble saw the run chase through, with some quick runs off both the bat and off some wides to reach the required score in 13.1 overs.

So, B&P are on the road next, with a trip to Orsett; and the rest of the league will be looking at this result and wondering what goes in the tea at Mopsies these days.......
