Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club 1st XI Sat v Billericay on Sat 25 Aug 2007 at 1230
Basildon & Pitsea Cricket Club Won by 6 Wkts

Match report Only 3 games left, still in with a chance of promotion but Billericay needed to win to have any chance of staying up.

Lovely summer's day, not too warm though forecast to warm up later. Got there early, first in fact, no-one in the nets this week. George turned up next, went & inspected the wicket & declared it ideal for Asif.
Though I was hoping it'd be good for ex-fast bowlers heading for the other side of the hill.

Eventually, a keyholder arrived and opened up so went to make a cup of tea. Had bought my mug with me specially as needed lots of tea having got off my sickbed to be there.

Tanvir turned up without Asif. He'd gone to get him to find Asif's wife had gone into labour so he was unavailable. But Lukey Daw was ready & willing to step into the breach... And with luck Brown's form would improve from last week.

Anyway... we won the toss & fielded first. Brown took the wicket of their opener in his 3rd (our 5th) over and their no. 2 with the 1st ball of his 6th over, leaving them on 21 for 2. In the meantime their no.3 had retired with a bad back so it was looking good (it wasn't serious, he came back on later I'm not *that* mean, well not yet).

By his 12th over Brown was on 24-4, Billericay were on 62-4 after 23 overs and it was a lovely day for a game of cricket. There was a bit of a hiatus while Billericay got another 50 without loss but then their next player fell to a run out from Tanvir (off Michael's bowling).

Kiran took the next wicket in his first, the 42nd over, then Mr Lewis finally stopped Fluffing around and got the wicket of the man with the bad back. The next 2 wickets both fell to Kiran but we couldn't get them out and they ended up declaring on 180-9.

Fielding could have been better, but there were good catches from Joe, Michael & Ross. And only 7 extras this week - all byes.

After a splendid summer tea of cucumber sandwiches, meringue nests & cherryade we started our innings at about 3.30 in a mini heatwave. We sportingly gave Billericay a chance by losing our openers cheaply, both gone by the 11th over - same as Billericay's had.

Tanvir played along by retiring not out but Ross wasn't playing & hit them for 75, including 14 4s, his best score for 2 seasons; it took them till the 37th over to get him out. Joe weighed in with 38 while Danny got 21 not out ending the game in the 44th over with a 4, one of 4 in his innings.

Woodford & Fives both also won so no change at the top - until next week.

Views & opinions mine, all mine.
